Nshenyi cultural center is a home of cultural entanglement. It is an exhibition of unity between a unique cultures with modernization, helping to preserve the rich culture and way of life amidst the changing society. The centre is situated on the river banks in the middle of inspirational hills in Nshenyi village. The center makes it easy to see the roots of a rich Ankole culture in south-western Uganda whose existence has been long dominated by the long horned cow. You will be welcomed by warm people in the Kinyankole way of hugging.

Explore a cultural park at the centre with two model traditional home steads that showcase cultural arts, tools and activities including milking a long horned Ankole cow.

The beautiful sights and sounds of the river falls where one will see varied species of birds.  It’s a fisher’s paradise.   If you love fishing, you will certainly catch more and rare fish than you ever imagined. You may luckily see some hippos, crocs and buffalos from the near Ibanda game reserve in Tanzania. Many primates such as baboons are easy to see any time of the day.

The centre has extensive and secure camping grounds for guests who enjoy camping. Before you go to sleep, you are treated to Camping facilities are cozy with nice flushing bathrooms and showers.

Activities and experiences:

  • Experience the traditional music and dance of south-western Uganda
  • Participate in the milking of long horned ankole cows
  • Watch milk being processed and presented
  • Go for an uphill hike to visit farmers that harvest honey from the caves and rocks of the surrounding hills
  • Learn about traditional homestead crop cultivation and food processing

Highlights

  • You will learn how the traditional home setting, how the houses are named or partitioned for traditional reasons
  • Participate in making the Ankole handicrafts or playing some of the key traditional games with the locals
  • A campfire where locals tell some of their history and the rich Ankole culture and the famous riddles experience the traditional lifestyle of Banyankole people and their cattle keeping background.
  • Getting immerse in the community through nature walks, visiting homesteads and learn about tools and techniques passed on through the ages.
  • Visiting some of the local schools, the local markets and the Batwa pottery makers.
  • Walking through large tracts of traditional crops such as banana plantations and a variety of subsistence and commercial crops as you learn the local methods of farming.

  • The centre has spread its vision to other areas within the district through partnerships with community institutions.
  • Advocating for the conservation of the traditions, beliefs and practices of this cattle keeping community.

How to get there:

Nshenyi Cultural Village is located on the boarder of Rwanda and Tanzania on a farm near Kitwe Town on the edge of Ntungamo District. It is a thirty minute drive from Ntungamo Town centre, or an hour’s drive from Mbarara.  The village can be accessed from any of the three countries by road.
