Judith Rutaro homestead is small home in Rumuri village,surrounded by a small farm of bananas, coffee, fruit trees and other food crops. The family rears pigs, goats, ducks and chicken. It is located along the Mbarara Kasese road near Queen Elizabeth national park. The homestay offers 2-4 people a place to spend a night in the home. Visitors dine with the family and those interested can get engrossed in home daily chores mentioned above.

The family home facilities include; 2 furnished bedrooms (one with a medium sized single bed and another with twin beds), mosquito nets, shower bath in shared bathroom, outdoor squat toilet, local homemade breakfast, lunch and dinner, fan and electricity.

During the stay, the host will show you how they accomplish their daily activities and the local hand tools used. Some of the home activities you can participate on includes feeding of animals, gardening, and coffee harvesting, processing, grinding and packaging for sale.

Besides, Douglas can take you around the village to get an extra experience of the community and astonishing scenery of the multiple crater lakes, the fascinating Great Western Rift Valley escarpment and panoramic view of Kyambura Gorge in Queen Elizabeth National park surrounding areas.

The home is located in the rural village where you will not find ATMs so one must either pay in advance or travel with cash.

Highlights include;

  • Coffee roasting and grinding
  • Listening to the traditional stories of the Banyaruguru people
  • Sharing the local favorite dish with the family (fish and obwita)
  • Participating in the agriculture tour farming fruits, coffee and domestic animals

How to get there: 

Rumuri village can be reached by public transport from Kampala or Kasese. The homestay is located about 400m from “Hakitoma” (meaning, by the fig tree – in the local language- on Mbarara-Kasese road.
