Bughalitsa community tours are located in the Rwenzori foothills overlooking the Lake George plains and queen Elizabeth National park. In these exciting tours, the community currently offers hill tours, community village walksand give the clients an opportunity to camp on top of the hills on leveled grounds. Other community tourism packages offered include volunteering at a local school, home stays where tourists are accommodated by a local household.

The group was established in 2010 by 20 local members, 11 of whom were male and 9 women. The main objective of the group when it was started was improving the livelihoods of the local people through participation in tourism, while ensuring environmental and cultural conservation.

Activities and experiences

  • Hiking/ hill climb tours, starting from Rukoki through the hill farms and communities
  • Volunteering at a local primary school
  • Accommodation through overnight camping and homestay on top of the hills.

Responsible Travel

  • Part of the groups’ income from tourism and community initiatives is given back to the community to support the education within the community and improve children welfare.
  • The project has planted a wood lot and has secured piece of land for conservation through planting indigenous trees.
  • The project has a plan of sensitizing the community on conservation issues with specific focus against bush burning as wild fires happen to be the greatest threat to the environment in the community.
  • The camping site is fully community owned and managed. It will create employment and other opportunities to the local people.
