It is a community initiative working to promote conservation of Lutembe Bay wetland and Ramsar site. While you’re here, you will spot many of the approximately 340 bird species, both migratory and resident to the wetland can be recorded. This place is one of the major bird migration stopovers and one of the most interesting sites for bird watching around Lake Victoria. You will learn how this wetland plays a significant role to the community sustainable livelihoods through fishing, farming, and collection of crafts natural materials, transportation and ecotourism.
Lutembe area caries quite rich history of Uganda as President Idi Amin loved the place very much. You will see or even sit in the Iddi Amins’ chair that he used whenever he visited this beach. You can also visit a cave where a legendry crocodile called Lutembe, whose name was given to the beach, used to stay. You will listen to the local tales of how people used to seat on the back of Lutembe to go and see other gods in the lake.
Other activities include nature walk in and around the wetland, Island walk with a chance of seeing lizards, butterflies and the agriculture tour to learn the local crops, organic medicines and backyard farming or ending your visit with a Buganda cultural performance where you may choose to join the dancers and learn the local moves. A guest house overlooking the lake can be reserved if booked before arrival.

How to get there:
Located on the shores of Lake Victoria. Branch off Kampala – Entebbe highway towards Lake Victoria, following the signs of lutembe beach. You can turn off either at Kajansi or Namulanda and drive on the marrum road until you reach a village called Dewe in Ssisa. The office is located here. The driving time from Entebbe highway is about 10-15 minutes.
