Uganda is a landlocked country located in the great Lakes region in East Africa with Kenya to the East, South Sudan to the North, Democratic Republic of Congo in the West, Rwanda to the South-western and Tanzania to the South. Uganda astride the equator and extends 4 o north and 1o South latitude and 30 o to 35 o East longitude. Uganda is 241,551 sq km with 17% of the total land mass covered by water and 11% forest, and has a population of 35 million people. The official language is English with Luganda in the central part but also the most widely spoken around the county. Some of the other commonly spoken languages are Runyakitara in the west and southwest and Luo in the north.
The country has fertile soils, climate is mainly tropical with 2 rainy seasons with semi-arid in the North-east. Uganda is mainly plateau with a rim of mountains; 620 to 5,111m above sea level; and vegetation ranges from savanna to equatorial and montane forests, and fertile arable soils.
Uganda hosts the source of the Mighty River Nile and shares Lake Victoria (source of the Nile), with Tanzania, and Kenya. Lake Victoria is the second largest fresh water lake in the world. Other wildlife features of Uganda include; 1/3 of Africa’s bio-diversity hosting the big five and the over a half of the remaining mountain gorillas plus a 1/10 of the world’s bird species, snowcapped mountain on the equator, the world’s largest caldera on mount Elgon, man-made lake, largest hippo and primate concentration. Uganda hosts the second deepest lake in Africa, largest national park in Africa and world’s strongest water fall, widest cultural diversity, most hospitable people, sweetest pineapple and ripe dissert banana, and hottest chilli.
