Ruhija Gorilla friends’ Resort and campsite is a local community tourism cooperative that involves seven different groups that innovatively involves communities in gorilla conservation and community sharing the benefits from gorilla tourism. The cooperative was formed in 2008 providing budget accommodation to the tourists as part of the many community development and conservation innovations played by different members of the cooperative.

Ruhija Gorilla friends resort is an ideal budget accommodation during your trip to see gorillas and birds in Bwindi Impenetrable National park. Staying with Ruhija Gorilla Friends will be easy for you to track Bitukura and Oruzongo Gorilla Groups, the briefing point is about 500m from the campsite (Ruhija Gate).

The campsite has furnished safari tents, a restaurant and bar. The tents and restaurant overlooks the deep valleys and the gorilla forest as you relax on the balcony of your safari tent. Ruhija area is home to a multitude of bird species mammals and primates including the great gorilla that lives in the Park. The camp promotes other local tourism products offered by the different groups within the area.

Staying at the Ruhija gorilla friends’ campsite is the gateway to involvement and supporting the community run and owned innovations that sustainably change people lives while conserving the rare mountain gorillas in Bwindi impenetrable National Park

Responsible travel:

  • Ruhija gorilla friend’s resort campsite is a cooperative of 16 founder member and seven groups doing different conservation and community development projects. The camp shares revenue with all of these founder member and groups at the end of the trading period. One of these several projects is a bee keeping project that has a direct positive impact on forest conservation through pollination.
  • The camp harvest rain water during rain seasons and in dry seasons the community members supply water and earn income.
  • The camp promotes local culture through arts and dances. This helps to preserve the culture and nature.
  • The camp is fully owned and run by the local community. This gives both skills and income. The skills are followed up by several training sessions to the workers and community members.

How to get there:

Ruhija is about 400 kilometers from Kampala city and about 52 kilometers from Kabale town, it is about 52 kilometers from Buhoma-Bwindi impenetrable National park`s HQ. When travelling from Kabale you will branch off Kisoro road by signpost of UWA-Ruhija after Ruhija gate branch by the sign of ITFC and Ruhija Gorilla Friends Campsite leaving the road to Buhoma until you reach Ruhija trading center.
