Kyanjuki Handicrafts Women Association is a group of local women (farmers) living on the foothills of Rwenzori mountains around Kalembe park gate. The women converge at the base camp where they own a handicrafts shop targeting the tourists who go to the Rwenzori Mountains. Women in the Rwenzori Mountains have very little room on benefiting from mountaineering tourism yet they play a very big role on household livelihoods in the community. Tourism being one of the key income generation activity, the women find a big challenge over depending on men for financial and other forms of support.
The group demonstrates women empowerment alternative sustainable livelihoods related to tourism through sale of handicrafts products. The shop is a display of assorted beautifully developed arts, crafts and usable items made out of both local and recycled materials. The product range include Baskets, shopping bags, assorted jewelry from beads and other materials, textiles and other small items suited to both travelers and local people in the area.
Besides the crafts, these women engage in both group and household faming. Other activities include traditional dance performances, microfinance and craft making demonstrations to the tourists. The location of this shop at the gate of the trekkers’ hostel, which also acts as the base camp to Kilembe gate, makes the shop ideal for your memorable souvenirs that also changes the life of a local woman.
