Upendo African Art and Crafts (UAAC) situated in lira town northern Uganda is an income generating activity for Upendo community training in skills (UCTS). UAAC crafts producers turn locally available raw materials into finished products & sell them to NGOs, Tourists, Schools, Cultural Groups and Individuals among others. The project conducts sensitization & training local community to be creative thinkers in crafts development and other living skills.

Upendo is also involved in cultural dance performances, youth empowerment through skills development. Upendo art inspires many including schools, tourists, cultural groups and individuals who use it to maintain African heritage that has long been neglected by younger generations.

Upendo works in the Lango sub region with her head office located in Lira town. The project has a selection of different cultural performances representing the different tribes in the region. Upendo’s experience of participating in different shows and demonstrations of the traditional dancing, food exhibition, crafts work and training makes them an ideal place you will get the knowledge of the life in northern Uganda. The skilled guides of Upendo will be available to take you to the un-explored cultural and natural attractions of northern Uganda.

Activities and experiences:

  • Dark tourism involving a visit to the Balonyo mass grave site where Kony killed over 300 people
  • Visiting a traditional home to try the local dishes of northern Uganda including shear butter • Art and crafts display
  • Traditional performances

Highlights

  • Trying the northern Uganda rich selection of foods still unknown to other parts of Uganda and the world.
  • Visiting the mass grave of the Joseph Kony killings and hear the story of the good life after the Joseph Kony brutal war.
  • Visiting some of the cultural sites reflecting the story of slave trade times in Uganda.
  • Shopping for hand crafts produced by community members.
  • Traditional dances where visitors may actively participate if they so wish.

Responsible travel:

  • The project trains local youths in productive skills such as tour guiding and making handcrafts to enable them earn a living.
  • The traditional dances and crafts help to preserve and conserve the culture.
  • The project generates money to provide adult literacy and other trainings to the local people to rebuild their lives after the infamous Joseph Kony insurgency.

How to get there:

Upendo is located in lira town northern Uganda. It is approximately 342 km from Kampala and it takes approximately 4.5hours by bus. When in Lira town, the office of Upendo is located on juba road opposite Lira P7 School, the same road that heads to Gulu. You will call their contacts when in lira town.
